Biography

From an early age, Annika Diehl developed a keen interest in painting, drawing and illustration. Having spent part of her child-hood in rural Sweden, she was surrounded by myths, age-old forests and ancient folklore, which would have great impact on the subjectmatter, style and mood of her work.
At the age of ten, Annika started taking art classes at a local art school that specialised in watercolours. It opened her eyes to a whole new world of possibilities and it was at this point where she contemplated becoming an artist.
In 1992, Annika decided she wanted to experience living in a different country, so she spent a year studying in France. The experience solidified her yearning to become an artist, so once the year was done, she returned to Montreal and completed a Fine Arts DEC at John Abbott College in 1994, followed by a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Concordia University in 1997.
Annika now divides her time between teaching art to children ages 6 to 18, and creating art out of her home-based studio. Her freelance, personal and commissioned work has appeared in books, magazines and greeting cards, as well as several Montreal businesses and many private homes. She lives just outside of Montreal with her husband, daughter and three cats.
Method
Annika works in coloured pencil, inks, oils, acrylics, gouache and watercolours, though her preferred medium is water-colour. She has developed a versatile style of working, allowing her to work on several paintings at the same time. Whether layering mediums together in her mixed media series, or working small sections painstakingly in her water-colour series, Annika's love for the narrative are apparent in her paintings, which unfold much like a story. Myth, reality and the subconscious seem to fuse together, like the lines and colours of her subject-matter; sometimes they are subtle and other times they are direct.
